Outside the city, fences are measured in thousands of feet, not hundreds. Ranch fencing is priced very differently from a backyard fence: per foot costs are lower, but corners, braces, gates and clearing add up.

Common types

  • Barbed wire: 4 or 5 strands on T-posts with wood or pipe corners. The cheapest way to hold cattle.
  • Woven field fence: for goats, sheep, dogs and smaller stock, often with a strand of barbed wire on top.
  • High game fence: 8 ft woven wire for deer and exotics.
  • Welded pipe fence: heavy steel pipe posts and rails, often with cable or sucker rod. Strong and long-lived; common for entrances, pens and frontage on ranches across South Texas.

What drives the price

Total length, terrain and brush clearing, how many corners and H-braces, post spacing, wire type, gates and cattle guards, and travel. Pipe fence is usually quoted per foot including paint or primer, with gates extra.

Typical installed cost: barbed wire $1 to $6 per linear foot, woven or field fence $1.50 to $6 per linear foot, pipe fence $13.50 to $40 per linear foot, about $13.50 in rural Texas (Fixr, HomeAdvisor, HomeGuide, Bob Vila, Angi).

  • Fence type and height: wood, vinyl, chain link, iron or aluminum, ranch; 4, 6 or 8 ft
  • Length: rough linear feet, or the lot size. A sketch of the fence line helps
  • Gates: how many, walk or drive, manual or automatic
  • Old fence: anything to tear out and haul away
  • The site: slope, trees, sprinklers, and which side takes the wind off the bay
  • Rules and timing: HOA requirements, a pool, and your time window. Photos help; mention them and the contractor will ask.
